Synopsis
How do you solve a mystery when everyone is a suspect? Itโs 1893, and some of the worldโs brightest minds are traveling by train to the Worldโs Fair in Chicago. But after a dastardly crime puts the fate of the Fair in peril, only you can piece together the clues and collar the criminal. All aboard for a whodunit that will keep you guessing until the last twist of the tracks!

Go to Mystery Train if youโre not already there. Then, walk over to the guy pushing hard on something. Can you believe it? Itโs Thomas Edison! Talk to him. He wants you to help him with his ramp. Soโฆ do it! This is the order to make the ramp work (smallest to tallest, left to right):
Andโฆ Yay! For being so nice and helping him, you get a Train Ticket! All aboard!
So, get on the train, and you’ll get to talk to and meet lots of people, many of which are famous! However, be sure to speak to this guy. It’s George Ferris, inventor of the Ferris wheel.
Oh no! The wheel isnโt working! Heโll give you a Telegramย message.
Now go left to meet more people. Be sure to talk to everyone! Enter Susan B. Anthony’s cabin, and she will give you a Women’s Suffrage Pamphlet.
Keep going left, and pick up theย Pencilย on the table in VIP Car 2.
Also, enter Mademoiselle Moreau’s cabin and she will give you a Le Monde newspaper.
Finally, go meet Mr. Edison. He got his machine ready, and wants to test it out! And thenโฆ Itโs working! But disaster strikes. Because just as he leaves to get the reporterโฆ The train curves, and goes into a tunnel. And momentarily, the light is gone! And when th light is back, the machine is stolen. Then Mr. Edison comes backโฆ
And soโฆ youโre on the case. Talk to the New York Times reporter. Apparently Twain has a secret compartment. Go over to Twain’s cabin, andย when you talkย to Mark Twain, he getsโฆ quite suspicious when you mention the secret compartment.
So tap around the walls, to find the different sounding wall. Itโs the one that’s third from the left on the second row, and when you click it,ย it’ll go โTHUMP!โ
It turns out it was just a manuscript of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that Twain was working on. Oops. But then, suddenly, the train stops.
Once you get out, talk to the reporter. He says that he heard someone running outside of Edisonโs door! He might have left a clueโฆ
Go ask more people around. Again, talk to everyoneย –ย you canย start from the right, all the way, and work yourย way to the back of the train.ย Susan B. Anthony saysย that Teslaย has been lockedย in his cabin the whole time.
Gustave Eiffel said that he heard a cabin door open and close when the train went into the tunnel that could’ve been Tesla’s, and Erik Weisz doesn’t think disappearing is too difficult.
Well, remember what the NY Times reporter said about hearing someone outside Edison’s door? Sure enough, when you go check, you’ll have a new clue: the floor is covered with prune juice!
After discovering the prune juice, you can start the questioning all over again.ย Not much information is revealed, except Edison saysย the prune trail seemed to lead to the coal car. Le Monde Reporter (whom I call Frenchy) says a similar thing. Now go to the dining car further left.
When you talk to the Porter, he/she (the porter is supposed to look just like you) throws the order sheet away, saying that orders are confidential, and then he/she will walk away.ย So open up the Porter’s Notepad that gets left behind, and using the Pencil, check for an imprint.
Apparently,ย Teslaย ordered the prune juice. But he wonโt talk to you. So go take a look at his luggage.
There are coal smudges on his trunk, and when you lean down, you get attacked by a pair ofย scissors.ย If theyย reallyย wanted to get rid of you, they would have attacked with something more, uh, powerful. But this is Poptropica!
Anyway, you get the Scissors, and now you start asking again.
The Coal Man says this:
But for now, skip asking everyone. Just go straight to the Porter. And the Porter confirms that, yes, the Coal Manย didย get something to drink.
Now go to the luggage cart, and Frenchy will be right there. Talk to her. She says the key might be in his cabin, the key to Teslaโs trunk. But you canโt get in, so she tells you to go dress up as the Porter. So, go to the Porter’s closet, get the Porter’s Outfit, and put it on. Now go to Teslaโs room.
Once inside, he says he wants a pruneย juice refill. So walk to his drawers, and pick up the prune juice. Refill, refill. Then heโs got to go to the bathroom. And youโve got to find the key!
The location of the key varies. But first, you have to click everything else. The key will be in the place you click at the last moment, just before Tesla re-enters his room. And then, when you’ve got the Luggage Key and Tesla comes back, you can leave.
Go to his trunk, and use the key. The deviceย is in there! Frenchy will call the guards, and Tesla gets dragged awayโฆ and you go tell Edison.
But.. oh no! Edisonย plays the device, and Tesla was on the other side of the train when this thievery happened! Youโve caught the wrong person!ย *GASP* You’ll get the Grainy Picture.
After Tesla had been arrested, Edison says that the device was rolling and it mightโve shown an image of the real thief. However, the only person that ended up there was Tesla, just chilling in a train windowโฆ on the other side of the train. Which meansโฆ
You have to go talk to Tesla. But you canโt go through the coal car because a guard is blocking the way. Instead, you have to go ON TOP of the train! But how? Ok, go to the luggage car, climb up the luggageย and go up through the trapdoor.

Go up. Now youโre on the top of the train. Duck whenever the redย on the right side of the screen is more up, which meansย a tunnel is about to passย by. And jump when the red is further down, which means a sack is about to get in your way. Make your wayย to the right until you see a hatch. Thatโs the coal car, whichย Tesla is in,ย all chained up.
Talk to him for a while. Heโll say that he had left behind something important in his cabin. And then heโll ask for something to write with. Click use on the pencil, and heโll draw a Sketchย of Tesla’sย Cabin like it was before he got captured.
Exit the coal room to the right. The guard will ask what you did, and you’ll lie saying thatย nothing’s up.ย Go to Tesla’s cabin and notice that the briefcase by Teslaโs bed is open. Click on Teslaโs sketch and once the screen opens up, click use. Click on the pencil and finally click on the briefcase to make a circle around it.
Go back to Tesla the way you did before. Talk to him, telling him that the briefcase is open and all. Heโll start to worry, because something important is inside.ย And he has no idea how the case was unlocked.
Um… Teslaโฆ Poptropicans donโt really have necks.
Moving onโฆย exit the coal carย and go into Erik Weiszโs room in VIP Car 1. Ask about the briefcase, and heโll start acting weird. You’ll get aย clue about his odd behavior.
Go to the New York Times reporter (heโs near Mark Twainโs room in VIP Car 2)ย and ask about Erik Weiszโs odd behavior. Heโll show you a New York Times Articleย with a guy who looksย familiar:ย Erik Weisz = Harry Houdini!
Go back into Houdiniโs room and move to the right to the right to pick up the Lock Pick Bag. Youโll confront Weisz for being Houdini and heโll escape through the hatch in his room.
Follow him!ย Which meansโฆ more top of the train traveling. Making sure to avoid the obstacles, go to the left until you see an opening on the red cart.

Once you land on that cart, youโll automatically go through the cart into the junk room. Youโll hear a โblub blubโ coming from inside those weird curtains. Use the scissors to reveal Houdini trapped in a water tank. But this is no trick: He canโt get out!
Now, you need to pick those locks, fast. Line up the things using the appropriate shaped pick and line up the line to where the color of the lock thing changes. The first one is easy because the locks are in order, but the others are all mixed up. Take your time to get it right, while still going quick.
Once you get Houdini out of there, youโll accuse Houdini of being a thief. However, heโll reveal that heโs trying to solve the mystery, just like you are.

Finally, heโll say to talk with Tesla AGAIN and find out what he is hiding. Heโll disappear (literally) and you need to go on the roof. Again. Goย all the way toย the luggage room or Houdiniโs room (either way itโs fine, but itโsย quite a distance from here) and jump up to the hatch.
Go back to the coal room, via the train top, and talk to Tesla.ย ย He wonโt talk until you free him. Use the lock picks again and heโll tell you what was inside the briefcase: the transformer designed to power the ferris wheel. Heโll give you a Transformer Sketch. Go back to VIP Car 2 and talk toย Markย Twain in his cabin. Heโll say this:
Ok, now go to the left until you reach the Pinkerton car. You have to be swift to avoid the traps. Jump up the boxes and jump over the first gap and fall down the second gap. Move quickly to the left and exit the Pinkerton car.
Youโll end up in the last boxcar where ANOTHER famous passenger is. And who is it?
Grover Clevelandโฆ that guy who became president twice, right? Pick the second dialogue option, and Cleveland will help you piece the clues together. When heย pauses, hereโs the order in which to click the pictures: prune juice, coal marks, luggage key, briefcase, transformer.

Once theย long conversation is over, go and get to that luggage room. Fortunately, the Pinkerton guard hasย moved the traps out of the way for you, so you can navigate easily. Keep going until you reach the luggage room. Use the key once again and click on the white cover on the case.
So… itโs either โFrenchyโ or Gustav Eiffel. Talk to Eiffel, and he’ll say that heโs French, but thereโs a ladyโs handkerchief in there, so itโsโฆ *dun dun dunnn* โFrenchyโ. After the talk, you will arrive at the fair. Now to get off and stop her from destroying the transformer.
Soโฆ sheโs only doing this for her countryโs reputation? Oh wow. She will run off and you got to go after her. Once you reach the first area, youโll see her cry to the guards and do a pityย cry emoteย to get them to go after you. WHAT A DRAMA QUEEN!
The guards will chase after you now. Quickly go up to the podiums and wait for the first lion to be fed. Once it’sย chewing, jump on its nose. Do the same with the rest of them. Youโll land on a platform. Quickly jump onto the bouncy window awningsย and avoid the flamesย and sharp swords being thrown around.ย Youโll come acrossย a sleeping Poptropican using a snake flute, and a snake going up and down. Jump up on the snake’s cap, then go left.
Youโll accidentally interrupt a dancing show, and youโll experience one of many Poptropica firstsโฆ theseย girls twirl!
Once you get on the ledge, youโll see Frenchy at it againโฆ she’llย pity-cry to the guards, and sheโll even throw inย the laughing emote as well.
Now, get on the totem poles.ย Jump from totem pole to totem pole, trying not to fall to the ground. Once you get to the fourthย one, the guards will shake one of the totem poles and knock them over,ย causingย a domino effect.ย Go left – now!
(notice that the weather is starting to look iffyโฆ are we at another Poptropican first here?)
Youโll see Frenchyย jump up the Ferris wheel. Follow her by climbing ropes and jumping up platforms. And itโs raining. Great. Umbrella anyone? Anyone? No? Just get back on topic? We donโt care for these Poptropica firsts? Ok.
(Hey, watch the lightning! Iโm having a confrontation here!)
Once you get up to platform #13, Frenchy will push a crate to push your platform down a notch.
Jump up the roof of the platformโฆ and swing aย rope thing across. 
Yet ANOTHER Poptropican first!
Youโll land on the other side. Climb up more ropes and jump on more ferris wheel cars. Once you reach the roof of a damaged cart, Frenchy will throw Tesla’sย transformer.
Quickly jump on the rope and swing. Youโll grab the Transformer and land on the other side once again. Jump up some more carts and corner Frenchy. Sheโll be startled by a lightning flash and fallโฆ into a water tank?
Talk to George Ferris and give him the transformer. Finally, talk to Grover Cleveland and heโll reward you with the Island Medallion and credits to spend inย the Store.
Congratulations, youโve completed Mystery Train Island! Case closed. ๐

- Mystery Train Island is Poptropicaโs 21st island. It was set to release at 4:21pm on October 7, 2011, in honor of two things: Poptropicaโs 4th birthday and 21st island. The login page featured a train chugging across the screen upon launch.
- The John Bull locomotive (the eponymous train of this island adventure, which is named on the Train Ticket) is on its way to the Chicago Worldโs Fair (Columbian Exposition) of 1893,ย which is historically accurate.
- Common room: Reverie Lounge
- The famous Van Gogh paintingย Starry Night is seen in Eric Weiszโs cabin, hanging above his bed.
- The trainโs freight car contains elements from many different islands, as explained in the Poptropica Creatorsโ Blog. For example, you can see masks from Nabooti and totems from Reality TV Island.
- Mark Twain in this island is working on his manuscript for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which in real life was first published 1884. However, the year of this island is 1893, so the book should have already been published.
- The coal smudges made by the French Le Monde reporter shows five fingers, although Poptropicans generally donโt have any fingers.
- Many of the characters you meet are famous historical figures, including Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, and Susan B. Anthony.
- Le Monde is a real French newspaper that still exists today.

- There was a preview game called D.C. Diner available since August 11, 2011. Itโs similar to the popular game Diner Dash, and while it is no longer available, you can read about it here.ย Every time you served a VIP on D.C. Diner, a prize would be added to your items: Edison Light Bulb, Mark Twain Haircut, Magicianโs Hat, Eiffel Tower Hat, Tesla Coil. The latter three prizes were only available to members.

I’m not sure what the guide says, but the key you find in his room is to his bag in the luggage car on the train.
And another thing about the key: I think the hiding place varies, because it was behind the shirt in Tesla’s closet for me.

For the thing about the key, it does vary, but you really don’t have to look anywhere. Just wait until Telsa is right outside the door, then click any hiding place and that’s where the key will be.

Go on the roof to the room where the bad guy is and then go to the conductor.

If you get to one of those tunnels, duck down (make the your arrow point to the ground) and stay like that until the tunnel passes by.

Are you trying to open the luggage key in Telsa’s room, or in the luggage cart? The one you are looking for is in the luggage car, not Telsa’s room.
Frenchy wasn’t in the luggage cart please help. how did u find the clue where Telsa got the drink??? /:|

Does anyone get this bug where you are stuck in a loop of stuff you have to do? I can’t get away from Tesla asking me if I have a pencil! HELP!!!!!!
I had that problem if I exit out of Poptropica right after I finished Mystery Train. It repeats the last scene with Frenchy and the transformer!
when I first tried to do mystery train, i was running around using the pencil in every car. In the coal car, when i used it (and this was almost at the very begining of the island) an invisible telsa gave me the thing where you have to notice that the breifcase is open! i restarted the island. wierd, huh.
After this mission, I want to change my look but it’s saved in ma costume closet and every time I click on the look, it says you can save up to 30 looks in your closet with membership how do I fix this i would really like to know.
You can only customize from your closet if you have membership. You could customize from the island photo album, but this will only feature some of your photos (all if you’re a member), and the costumes are whatever you were wearing at particular moments when you were playing the islands.

I used Transperacy (dunno if spelled rfight) Tonic and I did it in the 2nd gap thing. It worked!

What I did to find the key was to click on EVERYTHING an right when he was about to enter, I clicked on the books. It probably varies from player to player like Max said, but for repeating a scene over and over, try clearing your cache, or save and press F5.
my fav part bout mt is that you hav 2 swing on those swinging thing. I did not want to leve mt

I don’t know if anyone noticed this, and this won’t really affect the gameplay, just wanted to point this out.
On the train in the freight car…in front of the totem things there’s this bike-looking-thing. I thought it looked familiar. It was standing on the road on Time Tangled Island, Thomas Edison’s time period (I think it was)…
It is, and the rocket board from Astro Nights is in that car too.

I got 150
Erik Weisz was Houdini’s real name. He took his stage name from famous French magician Robert Houdin. Houdin was his childhood idol. Robert’s family ended up hating Houdini because he used his name, and Weisz/Houdini ended up writting books to expose Roberts secrets and to prove him to be a fake. Houdini was accutally a terrible magician, but a great escape artist.
Of course it was the le monde reporter she was in the luggage room

And it’s funny (not haha funny) Edison says that he and Tesla are rivals, but for a while they were actually partners in their work. Then Tesla got really ambitious and decided he didn’t like the way Edison ran things, so he left and started his own electricity… (not company, but you get the idea).

Actually you can. You go ALL the way to the right, past the coal guy, until you see the captain. Talk to him and he will ask you if you want to get off the train and start a new island

The transformer shows up in my inventory as a white box, and I can’t give it to Ferris!

*sigh* did you get it wrong? it says dining car but in poptropica it says coal car.
No… the only mention of a dining car in the guide is for the prune juice, and it makes sense that prune juice is in there, not the coal car. In this part, you find the order sheet that says Tesla ordered prune juice.

You’ll need to get to Tesla by going on top of the train car. Go to the luggage car and climb up the luggage until you can click “Go Up.” Now you’ll have to duck when a tunnel passes and jump when a sack passes. Keep going right until you see a hatch, and enter it to find Tesla. It’s all written in the guide (under the part that says “dun dun dunn”) if you need more details. ๐

On the swinging rope part you can actually jump up to the platform were “Frenchy” is, if you click on her it does nothing but you can shrink her if you have the shrink ray it’s really funny.
If you open the bathroom doors and jump onto the toilet, when you close the doors STILL ON THE TOILET, you’ll fall from the roof. Magical toilet, anyone?
How many people do you talk to at the beginning? Thomas Edison keeps on telling me to talk to other passengers while I am waiting.

@hanthm44 – It sounds like the person White Blanket is referring to might be Mark Twain himself, who has a white bushy mustache. If you’re not sure who you’re missing, try watching the video walkthrough above to find every person you need to talk to.

Quit being such a downer. Just because one person is good at this doesn’t mean everyone is. I have beat 10+ islands. I’m pretty good at this game. And guess what? I used a guide 1/2 the time.

Check everything in the walkthrough to make sure you’ve done all the steps. To get past the Pinkerton security guard, you’ll need to go to the luggage car and climb up through the open trapdoor on the ceiling to go on top of the train.

I liked this island so much i finished it TWICE.
I was stuck in the trap car thing, you know, before you see Cleveland, but when i say this, i completed that part AND the whole island.
*GASP* I’m just starting this island, and I noticed that Erik Weisz has a trap door on his compartment’s ceiling!
