Main Street

Walk over to the Clockwork Cantina and complete the gear puzzle. Place the two brown gears on the ends, and the three blue gears go in the middle. Turn the crank when they’re all in place.

Now pick up the Multi-Tool that just appeared on the ground.

Walk to the right and you’ll see a garbage bin. Jump up on it to get the Steam Battery.

Walk to the right again and go inside the Museum. Run to the right and you’ll see a big yellow machine. Click on the blue lever to raise the arm. Then jump up on the platforms and make your way to the upper-right corner. Watch out for the darker platforms which will crumble and fall when you step on them.

Grab the Dirty Beaker out of the display case in top right. Then exit the museum.

Go back to the Clockwork Cantina. Jump up and click on the blue lever here. A mechanical ramp will extend. Run up it and then jump onto the steam chutes to fly up and over the tower. You should land on top of a glass dome. Use your Multi-Tool to open it and then go down inside.

You’re now inside the Mayor’s office. Check out the painting and the note on the typewriter, which gives you an important number to remember for later: 0516.

Leave the office, jump back down to the street and run to the left to enter the next zone.

Gear Alley

Pass by Sully’s shop and go to the blue building in the middle. This is the living quarters. Jump up the platforms on the left side and then run past the door. You’ll see a Robot Crab here. Jump up and land on top of him to make him bounce and flip over.

When he does, he’ll drop Sully’s Key. Pick up both the key and the robot crab.

Drop down to the street and go to the next building on the left. Jump up on to the steam chute and leap up to the roof. You’ll find an Old Vine here. Pick it up to place it in your backpack.

Run to the right until you get in front of Sully’s Steam Powered Paraphernalia store. There’s a Steam Terminal here. Use the Steam Battery in your backpack. You’ll get a puzzle here where you have to regulate the steam pressure in the terminal. The starting pressure is 10 and the ending pressure needs to be 5. You need to adjust the valves so that the pressure will lose five points as it travels to the end.

Sully’s Shop

Once you get inside Sully’s you’ll find a robot in the right corner. It’s Sprocket, your new mechanical buddy! Ring the bell on the desk next to him to wake him up.

Go pick up the Rubber Mallet from the junk box in the left corner.

Leave Sully’s and Sprocket will follow you. If you click on him you can ask him some questions. He’s not very talkative right now but you’ll hear a lot more from him later.

Head to the right to return to Main Street. Run all the way to the right side and then proceed onto the next zone, known as the Hub.

The Hub

When you arrive in the Hub, run along the ramp until you get to a metal hatch that is glowing red-hot. If you try to click it, you’ll see it’s much too hot to touch. Walk up to it and use the robot crab in your backpack. Sprocket the robot will take it from you and then drop the poor crab on top of the hatch. The water from the robot will cool down the hatch so that you can open it up.

Go down the hatch. When you get to the bottom of the ladder, Sprocket will look pretty scared. Make your way down the pipes until you run into a plant monster living inside them. Use the old vine from your backpack underneath the sign that says, Caution: Hot Steam. This will spray steam onto the plant monster and kill it.

Move along to the bottom left of the room and you’ll find the bottom of an elevator. Click on the round hatch above.

Now you’ll need to solve three levels of a ball tilt maze game that’s a lot like the classic wooden box Labyrinth game. Spin the wheel either clockwise or counter-clockwise with your cursor to get the ball to the center. After you complete all three levels, the elevator will power up.

Go back up out of this area to the street. Go a few steps to the right and jump up onto the spring. After three jumps, you should land up next to another blue lever. Click the lever and the giant Hub wheel will start to move.

Go back down onto the street and run to the left. Jump up and grab the vines and climb up to a platform. Wait for the moving platform on the Hub wheel to come around and then jump onto it. Then jump off in the upper right corner (aim for the yellow pipe).

Walk to the right and use the steam valve to jump up and to the left. Continue moving until you get to the elevator entrance to the Captain’s Cabin, and go inside.

A soon as you enter, Sprocket will be captured by some plant vines. Go down and click on the metal window shutters to snap the vines and free him. When you do, he’ll speak to you for the first time and say, “Thank you.” Now you can talk to him and ask him questions and hear his story.

Run to the right and use the moving platforms to get up to the large painting. It’s a copy of the painting you saw in the mayor’s office.

Click on the dial at the bottom of the picture. This is a combination lock.

The combination is the number from the mayor’s office: 0516. Starting with the innermost ring, click on each triangle to get the wheel to spin. Then click on it again when it’s pointing to the right number. The rings get faster so this can be tricky.

When you get the combination right, a secret door will open. Go inside and you’ll be in Captain Ziggs’ room. Sprocket will show you who he is.

Go to the left and pick up the Bridge Key (on the floor) and the Weed Whacker (up on the wall).

Leave the room. Go down and to the right and jump off the patio to return to the Hub zone. Go right until you get to the Steam Terminal at the end. Use the Steam Battery and then solve the puzzle. It’s just like the first one, but now you need to adjust the pressure from 10 to 16 (+6).

Once you’re successful, the bridge will lower and you can run across.

Production Zone

Take a few steps to the right and jump on the spring to get to the platform above. There’s a control panel here. Move all the levers to the down position and then press the green button.

The giant wrecking ball will drop and hit the ground, creating a hole.

Jump down and go through the hole. Make your way down and to the right and you’ll enter a mechanical room. First, press the three red pressure pads on each side of the machine (six in total).

Then you’ll need to press the two remaining pads (the ones on the machine) at the same time. Step on one, and you’ll realise you need someone else on the other. Talk to Sprocket, who will offer to hold down one while you get the other.

The machine will turn on and the moving platforms above will start turning. Use this to get up to the top of the room. There’s a lever on the left wall. Click it to get another platform to move up and down.

Then jump up to the right and use the platforms and vines to get to a moving conveyer belt. Here you’ll need to avoid blobs that drop from a plant monster.

Continue across the vines and soon you’ll find the Mech Steam Motor, one of two parts you’ll need to repair the Mech in Sully’s shop garage.

Continue up on the vines and go up to the Greenhouse.

Walk to the left and you’ll find an area for mixing Herbicide. Pay attention to the chart on the wall. Use the dirty beaker from your backpack and then fill it with four parts red, two parts green, and three parts blue. When you’re done, you’ll have some Herbicide Mixture.

Go to the right and then up to the platform above. Use the herbicide on the plant monster. It will shrink and disappear, revealing a maintenance closet. Go inside.

There’s an old custodian robot here. He’s holding onto the Living Quarters Access Key. Take it from him and then he’ll wake up and the alarm system will go off. You can’t leave the way you came because the security system has a pressure hose that knocks you back.

Go back out of the maintenance closet and then climb the vines above. Go to the left and you’ll see that the glass dome has some tiny white cracks here. Use the rubber mallet from your backpack to smash a hole in the dome and escape.

Now run all the way back to Gear Alley, which is on the left of Main Street.

Gear Alley Redux

When you arrive, go to the bottom of the living quarters building (blue) and jump on the right platform of the lever on the gear. This will raise the one on the left.

Take a few steps to the left, then jump up the platforms to arrive at the doorway to the living quarters. Use your Steam Battery on the terminal and then solve the steam valve puzzle again.

This time, you need to adjust the steam by -3 to get it from 10 to 7. The door will open. Go inside.

Living Quarters

Go click on the blue lever on the left to make the platform rise. Use it to get up to the next level and continue making your way up.

Jump on the blue button on the floor to make the ladder rise. You’ll need to quickly jump up the ladder because it falls back down a second or two later. When you get to the top left, there’s another door leading to Zack’s room. Go through it.

Zack’s Room

Go up to the top left corner and click on the wall to solve the next puzzle, which is a timed game where you have to get the steam to move safely from one corner to the other. You must click on the squares to reveal pipes underneath and then swap the pipes around to create a clear path. There are three levels to get through. When you finish, a ladder will descend.

Go outside and then cross over the vine that acts as a tightrope all the way to the left, where you’ll find the Mech Crank, which is the second piece you need to repair the Mech in Sully’s Garage.

Jump down to the street below and then go to Sully’s Garage.

Sully’s Garage

Use both the Mech Crank and the Steam Motor from your backpack on the Mech. It will be repaired and now you can walk around in the Mech. Is this the coolest thing ever in Poptropica or what?

You’ll also get a Teleporter device that you can use to instantly travel back to the Mech from anywhere you go on Steamworks Island.

Walking in the Mech, head out of the garage and over to the left. There’s a big doorway covered by vines. Attach the weed whacker from your backpack to the Mech and then use the spacebar to smash all the vines.

Go through the door when it’s all clear.

Storage Room

Now you’re inside a storage area. Make your way through, using the space bar to smash plant monsters that attack.

At one point, you’ll need to leave your Mech and power up one of the lifts. After you do, get back on the Mech and ride it up to the next platform.

Continue through this zone, killing plant monsters as you go. For the plant that throws red fruit at you, duck when the fruit flies in your direction, and creep closer until you’re able to hit the monster with your Weed Whacker.

For the final plant monster in the room, you’ll also need to get rid of him with your Weed Whacker by pressing space bar: once for the extended part that chomps out at you, and again for the main part of the monster.

Once you’ve defeated that plant, go through the doorway to the next zone.

Wind Zone

Go down the ramp to the left and you’ll find a giant windmill. Walk all the way up to the blades, hit the windmill with the Mech by pressing space bar to make the blades move, and then Sprocket will offer to help. Exit the Mech and stand on the blades as they spin to ride almost to the top.

Jump onto the platform above. Use your Multi-Tool to stop the blades.

steamworks windzone

Sprocket will open the door. Get back in the Mech and go through the doorway.

Hibernation Center

And now we finally learn the secret of what happened to all the inhabitants of Steamworks Island. First, exit the Mech and go to the machine. Use the Multi-Tool on it, and the room will light up.

Zack will emerge from his hibernation chamber and he and Sprocket will be re-united. How sweet! Mayor Crumb will also appear and tell you the story of what happened: their plant experiments had gone horribly wrong and the plants had become monsters. Two hundred years ago, the island’s inhabitants put themselves into the cryogenic chambers you see all around you to save themselves and wait for rescue. If you look around, you’ll see more people!

Then you’ll see and hear bumps from below. There’s still work to be done.

Jump up to the platforms on the right and grab the Toxic Blaster. Get back on the Mech and attach it.

Now, take the elevator down to the next zone.

Tunnel System

Move through the room and shoot down the attacking plants by aiming with the mouse and using the spacebar to fire. Kill the plants that get in your way. You want to end up on the platform just above the floor. If you miss it, you’ll need to stand on the bolt/screw thing and spin it to raise yourself up.

There’s a moving platform here. Wait for it and then ride it across to the doorway and prepare for the final battle…

Plant Hive

You’re now in the final boss battle. There are three boss monsters to kill and to make things even tougher, acid starts to fill the room from below. If you touch the acid, you have to start over. You only have a short time to defeat each boss monster.

The basic technique for all three monsters is to get up close enough so that they try to strike you with their heads. It’s kind of like the Hydra from Mythology Island. When they do, you can shoot them, causing a splat. Each monster needs to be splatted three times and then it will disappear and you can move on.

Tips for Defeating the 3 Plant Bosses

The basic moves you need to remember are these: move into position, duck, wait, shoot. Or if you want something easy to remember, stop, drop, and pop.

Moving into position means getting close enough to the boss monster that it starts to move its head and gets ready to attack. Next, duck down and then wait until he attacks and his head goes back. He’ll be vulnerable for a second or two, so then you just blast him until you see him go “Splat!” Each boss needs to be hit like this three times. The first boss is easy, but the second and third bosses have defenses that you need to take care of while attacking.

The first boss is easy-peasy. Here’s a chance to practice the basic moves that you’ll need to have down to beat the second and third bosses. Just remember the following.

  • Move into position
  • Duck and wait
  • Shoot!

Hit the boss three times to make him go “Splat” for good and disappear. Then quickly move on to boss number two.

steam monster1

The second boss is a lot like the first one except he shoots seed pods at you. You must shoot these down or they’ll hit you and knock you back. When you hit both, then repeat the basic steps: move into position, duck and wait, and then shoot. Splat this guy three times and move on to boss number three.

steam monster2

The third and final boss is the toughest of all. By now you’ve got the basic rhythm down, but there’s an added complication. Not only does this guy shoot seed pods at you, but he’s protected by powerful bombs that hang on the ceiling above you. If you are hit by one, the explosion will knock you back very far. If you’re not careful, you could get knocked all the way down into the acid below. Ick!

It makes sense to hang back and wait for some of the bombs to drop before you move in for the kill. Once the way is clear, shoot the seed pods he sends at you, then get in and repeat the basic steps. Get into position so that his head starts to move, then duck. Next wait for his head to snap back and then shoot. Hit him three times and it’s all over.

steam monster3

After you defeat the final plant monster, you’ll be presented with the Island Medallion and credits to spend at the Store. Congratulations, you’ve completed Steamworks Island!

  • Steamworks Island is Poptropica’s 14th island. It was released to members on August 12, 2010 and September 9, 2010 for non-members.
  • The island is inspired by steampunk, a sub-genre of science fiction featuring steam-powered machinery.
  • Common room: Steamworks Gear Shop
  • From July 16-30, 2010, members who logged in received a Steamworks Mech Pilot costume.
  • In Sully’s Steam-Powered Paraphernalia, there’s a model of the Poptropica blimp.
  • At the Hub, there’s a ball-tilting maze game similar to the classic wooden box Labyrinth game.
  • The quiet atmosphere of this island means you will seldom interact with, or even come across, other characters.
  • The name of the mechanical companion who follows you is called Sprocket, which is also the name of a wheel-like object found in machinery.
  • When you ring the bell to wake Sprocket inside Sully’s, it will make an audible “ding” noise.
  • On the blackboard in the greenhouse, it says “Hazmat was here” – probably in reference to Poptropica Creator alias Hazmat Hermit.
  • One of the questions you can ask Sprocket after he becomes more talkative is what he does for fun. He’ll say he’s been writing his autobiography and wants to call it I, Robot – which could be a reference to several works.
  • We’re told the inhabitants of Steamworks Island have been frozen for 200 years, which calculated from present time would mean around the time of the Industrial Revolution, when all this steam technology would have been rampant.

Full steam ahead!

Awesome guide by lone bones…I saw it on the comments of the Steamworks page but I couldn’t understand it. It is so cool!

    Can’t wait for Sept 9!!!

  2. Magicspark/mudkip gal says:

    Don’t worry I found it! 🙂
I also discovered a funny cheat!
Open your bag and go into your Reality TV items. Open the magazine. You’ll find the RTV application in there. Click on it. The application form now appears in your Steamworks inventory.
I don’t know if it works on other islands, but it should.
You can write on the form like you would on RTV. Cool!
Also, did you know that you can draw stuff with the pen on the form?

  3. Jane says:

I think I know how to defeat the 3rd plant.

You have to position yourself a distance away from the plant and keep shooting.

It seems that only the bullets and the bombs that drop from the wall can knock you back, since bumping into the plant doesn’t knock you back.

    • turtles-_- says:

the bombs knock you back to much and you die if the acid us on the floor below you you’ll be safe when you first encounter the boss. the bullets will knock you back just a little. Is it just me or do the seed bullets suck you in sometimes.

  4. Green Penguin says:

Don’t get TOO close to the third monster. I made that mistake, and was burned. Just stay away from the bombs and seeds. If you’re close enough he won’t shoot and the plants bombs won’t fall. Just keep trying!

Awesome guide, BTW! Finished in about an hour!

  5. Strange Joker says:

I can’t get past the second steam pipe puzzle level 😦 It runs out too fast and I can’t find any pieces that fit!

Hijuyo: Keep trying! Uncover the pieces as quickly as possible and think of a possible pipe route, then find the pieces to put it together in time. 😉

  6. Sammi97saj says:

Hello 🙂 I have a question regarding when you get to the point where you must push the large wind blades to get into the hibernation center. How do you get Sprocket to offer to help? I keep clicking on the blades and jumping and he won’t offer. I don’t know what to do so if you would mind explaining to me how you can get Sproket to help me, I could finally move on with Steamworks Island. Thanks 🙂
    – Sammi ❤ 🙂

Hijuyo: It’s pretty simple actually; all you need to do is keep jumping up until you get to the top so you can use your multi-tool to stop the blades from moving. Sprocket will then be able to open the door. 🙂

  7. Barefoot Raptor says:

I might know what happened. If the blades aren’t moving,
go right up to the blade, activate the Weed Wacker once, and it chould start moving. Then, exit your mech, jump up the the wheel on top, then use the multi-tool to turn it.
    BTW, great guide.

  8. Meme says:

in the gear alley you have to jump on the other platform first so that it raises the on on the left and makes it able to get you in front of the Living headquarters…

Thank you.. i just noticed that you didn’t have this =)

Hijuyo: That’s already mentioned in the guide…

    • DizzyDee says:

Yes, I follow the guides exactly. THe first one and second one can be beat in less than 2 minutes. Thanks to the stop drop and pop help, I managed it (but just barely) on two accounts.

  9. NeonAngel says:

Hey so I’m having issues with the wind zone area. Sprocket is not doing what the guide says he’s supposed to do. I’ve tried everything I can think of (this unresponsiveness has occured on ALL my multiple accounts). Could someone maybe help me out?

Hijuyo: Try watching a video to see what you’re supposed to do, in case you misunderstood the instructions. It should be listed on our Steamworks Island page.

    • turtles-_- says:

you hit the blade thing with the weed whacker to get the blade out of the way. they start moving and sprocket will help you if the blades stop moving. use the blades to jump up then use the multi tool to stop the blades. then sprocket will help you get the door open

  10. Shiny Star says:

How come I always click the “USE” on the Steam Battery but my poptropican keep saying, “Looks like I dont have the right battery key attachment for this terminal.” PLEASE REPLY! I need your help.

Hijuyo: You might be missing a few steps or items. Please read and follow the guide step-by-step, in order. If you’re still confused about something, try watching a video walkthrough which will show everything done in order.

  11. Jane says:

I have another method of killing the third plant monster! It’s quite special, as it involves dismounting your mech. First, you get your mech just a distance away from the plant. Then you EXIT MECH, and go nearer to the plant. It should make the angry, “I’m ready to shoot my head out” face. QUICKLY run back to your mech, get on it and shoot at the plant’s head.

By the way, I don’t get the “Stop Drop Pop” method. Wouldn’t you need to be way closer to the plant monster in order to provoke it to attack you? For the fist 2 plants, I just run into the monsters and let myself fly backward, since it’s part of the point.

  12. Mr. Cat says:

I couldn’t have stopped that brain plant without that “Stop, Drop, Pop!” But I thought of something kinda like “Stop, Drop, Pop” while defeating that brain plant without reading the “Stop, Drop, Pop” part of the guide! Thanks anyway.

    -Yours truly,
    Mr. Cat

  13. Ness-E says:

They should make a Followers Steamworks Pack where half are machines and half are mutant, flying plants. They should also make a mutant plant costume.

  14. ambee says:

On Steamworks Island, when I go to the weeds and I’m on the mech I’m having a problem with my backpack. I click on my backpack, it opens but none of my items appear. When I’m off the mech, I can open my backpack & see the weed wacker along with my other items. Can you please help? Thank you!

Hijuyo: Try attaching the weed whacker from off the mech, so you can access your items.

  15. magicbones/storm says:

This island is pretty cool, but it’s REALLY creepy. REALLY REALLY CREEPY. I enjoyed playing it, but it did creep me out.

  16. pinkie1114 says:

how do you get back on main street after you get the medal?

Hijuyo: Check for where you are on the Map, then from there, move in the direction towards Main Street. For a labeled Map of Steamworks Island, click here.

    • pinkie1114 says:

i tried to leave but it would not let me

Hijuyo: I don’t know why it wouldn’t let you, but click here to use the PopTransport if you need to teleport to Main Street.

  17. Future Prom Queen says:

I’ve beaten the first boss several times, but, I’m having trouble with the second boss. How many times does he have to shoot the seeds at you before he sticks his neck out to try and get you? Every time he tries to get me by extending his neck, the acid is almost to where I am. I really need some help on this part. Any advice?

    • somedude says:

the 2nd boss throws seeds 3,2 or 4 have to be take out the seeds quickly and then he’ll stick out his neck, hope this helps

      • somedude says:

oh yeah, one more thing, you dont have to wait for all of the third boss’s bombs to drop. if the 2 in the middle bombs drop, then go in the middle

    • white fang says:

yea it to i was playing this while watching my younger sister (she is 6) and she saw me beat ghost story island so when she saw the skeleton she started screaming “NO MORE GHOSTS!!! NOT THE GHOSTS AGAIN!!” lol 😉

  18. Happy Tomato says:

For the steam puzzle, I waited for a long time but no steam was coming out at all. The pipes just stayed there and nothing happened. I even tried clicking at the finish lever quite a few times but to no avail. HELP!

  19. Madster says:

I know this may sound dumb but since I finished Steamworks Island, I’m stuck at the Wild Zone. I can’t find my way back to Main street. I forgot how I got there. :/ Help?

  20. Nieky911 says:

How do I get sprocket to stand on the red button, talk to him did not work because every time when I try to talk to him, all he said was the phrase “wow i have never been down here before” …

make sure you pressed all six buttons and all the green lights lit up. the are 3 buttons on each side of the machine

  22. Nice Bean says:

I just have one question. Under the Hub, step 2, it mentions a vine. When do I get said vine?

Slanted Fish: Read Gear Alley, Step 2; it tells you to pick up an old vine there.

    • Nice Bean says:

I eventually found my way out. I was assuming the door was shoved on the right, when really it was further left.

  23. gloria19012 says:

What is the point of this?? Astro-knights : Save the princess. Reality TV: Win it. Great Pumpkin: Help Linus to make that hallow’en special.

Slanted Fish: The point of Steamworks is to figure out why it’s so quiet, and bring the people back.

  24. Fearless Dolphin says:

You forgot to write how to make the sails move. You have to whack it with the weed whacker.

Slanted Fish: It’s been added now. I didn’t write this guide, by the way, but I credited the author on this page.

  25. Shiny Monster says:

AAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!! SOMEONE HELP!!!!!!!!!!! I’m at the part where you have to hold down the things next to the factory, but Sprocket isn’t offering to help!!!!!!!

  26. trina231 says:

the third one was the easiest for me! the second one was super hard 😮
BTW when I was with the third monster thingy acid came really close that’s why the third one didn’t shoot pods at me and that made it super easy!!!!! i was scared when the acid came i thought imma going down!

  27. Angela says:

I left Steamworks before defeating the boss and now I can’t find my way into the Wind Zone or my mech! Please help!

Slanted Fish: Use your Teleporter item to transport back to wherever you left the Mech – go back inside the garage if you have to.
