Pathwise

Note: This mini game is now retired.

Pathwise was one of Poptropica’s multiplayer games. It was a puzzle and strategy game with the objective being to connect tiles of your color from one end of the board to another before your opponent does.

How to play

On your turn, click on any tile to change it to your color. Your goal is to create a pathway that connects the two sides of your color.

Video Guide

Gameplay

Each player will be on opposite sides of the screen – one player is on one of the two grassy green sides, the other at one of the two watery blue. Your goal is to reach the other side with your color before your opponent does. You will take turns to click on one of the 81 hexagonal tiles to make it part of your pathway.

Clicking on a tile when it is your turn will change the plain gray tile’s color to your own. If a tile has already been colored green or blue, it cannot be clicked on again. It is a 9 x 9 grid, but it depends on the player’s quick wits and calculations to win. When it is your turn, don’t hesitate for too long – or else your turn will get skipped!

Winning

Because there are no points in this game, the only way to win is to create a complete path to connect the two sides of your color together, before your opponent gets to it. The game ends when someone has won, or if the whole grid is filled. If the whole grid is filled and there is no winner, it is a tie.

The picture below shows that the game is over. As you can see, the player on the blue side has successfully created a path to connecting to the other blue side faster than his opponent, therefore being the winner.

Player Tips

  • By Slanted Fish: When making your move, also consider looking for a spot where you can color a tile that will block your opponent’s current path while building a secure pathway to the other side for your color.
  • By Rorytheblogger1: Try and block your opponent when it looks like their path will get across.
  • By Happy Horse aka Lady Horse aka Director Horse: Don’t make your path too twisty-turny. It gives your opponent time to get across, but you want to finish your pathway quickly, before your opponent does!
  • By Super Cool Man: Never, ever confuse your own player as your opponent! You’ll wind up picking the wrong tiles for your path, which could lead to losing the game.
  • By Coskit: Make sure you know which sides you have to connect! IF you EVER, EVER mix up the sides, you will lose time as your opponent gains spaces.
  • By Green Boa: Make your line on one of the sides that you’re opponent has to connect and go forwards on that way. Example – if you were trying to connect the two green sides, make your line straight across a blue side, it keeps your line straight and blocks your oppenents goal.
  • By Zany Dragon: DO make sure you keep track of your opponents moves as well as your own. Don’t give them an advantage by being ignorant. DON’T skip tiles. Some people try that, but if you do, your opponent can put a tile between them, blocking you.
  • By AlistaRista: Try blocking your opponent’s path by clicking a few spaces before where you think he/she wants to go. If you just block them one tile in front, they can go to the side of you to create their path.
  • By Mall Manager Clown: To know whether you’re water or grass, look at which side you’re on. If it’s left, you’re grass; and if you’re on the right, you’re playing as water. Also, try blocking your opponent’s path, and build a pathway while distracting him or her.
  • By Little Dolphin: The tiles on top of and next to the borderlines can be used as either water or grass…use this to your advantage! Theoretically, you could build a path right down the middle! Your opponent may not know that this works.

  1. First comment!
    I have a tip.
Try and block your opponet when they look like they will get across.

Hijuyo: Thanks, Rory, I added your tip to the page. 😉

  2. Tip: Never, ever mess up yourself as someone else! you can lose many rounds like that

Hijuyo: Thanks for the tip. 😉

  3. Make sure you know which sides you have to connect! IF you EVER, EVER mix up the sides, you will lose time as your opponent gains spaces. This is a VERY IMPORTANT tip.

    Hijuyo: Thanks, Coskit! 😉

  4. tip: It is better to block your opponent than trying to get across because when you block them, it wiil also help you get across.

  5. Pathwise is my best game! I have a tip.

Make your line on one of the sides that you’re opponent has to connect and go forwards on that way. Example, if you were trying to connect the two green sides, make your line straight across a blue side, it keeps your line straight and blocks your oppenents goal. 😉 Keeping your line straight means you’ll get to the end first. 😀

  6. I love this new game! It IS somewhat new… And thanks for posting this info!
    Tips:

    Hope these tips help! 😀

  7. Never try to block your opponent when they have the disadvantage, it could lead into losing because you are wasting your chance to win. Basically, don’t waste any time!

  8. I have a tip: if you are blocking your opponent’s path, try to go a few spaces before where you think he/she wants to go. If you just block them one tile in front, they can go to the side of you to create their path.

  9. If your opponent is on the grid right in front of the place you need to connect, make sure that you make a make a tile of your own. It will give you a clearer path, as well as block your opponent.

  10. I have a tip for the game: You can also get a path across if you make a path ending right in the middle of the line that seperates water and grass.

  11. THIS GAME IS HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    6 WINS AND 16 LOSSES????????????????????????????????
    I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Here’s a tip: The tiles on top of and next to the borderlines can be used as either water or grass…use this to your advantage! Theoretically, you could build a path right down the middle! Your opponent may not know that this works.

Slanted Fish: Thanks for the tip; I’ve added it in! 🙂

  13. Here’s a tip: If you’re trying to make a straight line, it doesn’t always work, and if your opponent is smart enough, he/she will know your move and try to block you, thus winning. It’s always best to plan your move beforehand so it would be easier and that you wouldn’t be stressing out after you’re been blocked by your opponent.

  14. Try making your path lay down on the opponent’s side so if they block your path you can switch from 2 or 3 columns. if their line is 2 or 3 tiles long, block it! if the put a tile in between your path, go beside it.

  15. Here’s a tip: Try making a straight line at first, but if your opponet blocks you, go around it and after filling up a few tiles, start filling up your tiles from the opposite side onwards, and connect it with any tile near! Works for me!

  16. Pathwise is either my 3rd of 4th mini game behind Sudoku, Soup words and Star Link! 😀
