Main Street

Walk over to the Clockwork Cantina and complete the gear puzzle. Place the two brown gears on the ends, and the three blue gears go in the middle. Turn the crank when theyโ€™re all in place.

sw2

Now pick up the Multi-Tool that just appeared on the ground.

sw3

Walk to the right and youโ€™ll see a garbage bin. Jump up on it to get the Steam Battery.

sw4

Walk to the right again and go inside the Museum. Run to the right and youโ€™ll see a big yellow machine. Click on the blue lever to raise the arm. Then jump up on the platforms and make your way to the upper-right corner. Watch out for the darker platforms which will crumble and fall when you step on them.

sw5

Grab the Dirty Beaker out of the display case in top right. Then exit the museum.

sw7

Go back to the Clockwork Cantina. Jump up and click on the blue lever here. A mechanical ramp will extend. Run up it and then jump onto the steam chutes to fly up and over the tower. You should land on top of a glass dome. Use your Multi-Tool to open it and then go down inside.

Youโ€™re now inside the Mayorโ€™s office. Check out the painting and the note on the typewriter, which gives you an important number to remember for later: 0516.

sw9

Leave the office, jump back down to the street and run to the left to enter the next zone.

Gear Alley

Pass by Sullyโ€™s shop and go to the blue building in the middle. This is the living quarters. Jump up the platforms on the left side and then run past the door. Youโ€™ll see a Robot Crab here. Jump up and land on top of him to make him bounce and flip over.

When he does, heโ€™ll drop Sullyโ€™s Key. Pick up both the key and the robot crab.

s10

Drop down to the street and go to the next building on the left. Jump up on to the steam chute and leap up to the roof. Youโ€™ll find an Old Vine here. Pick it up to place it in your backpack.

sw12

Run to the right until you get in front of Sullyโ€™s Steam Powered Paraphernalia store. Thereโ€™s a Steam Terminal here. Use the Steam Battery in your backpack. Youโ€™ll get a puzzle here where you have to regulate the steam pressure in the terminal. The starting pressure is 10 and the ending pressure needs to be 5. You need to adjust the valves so that the pressure will lose five points as it travels to the end.

sw11

Sullyโ€™s Shop

Once you get inside Sullyโ€™s youโ€™ll find a robot in the right corner. Itโ€™s Sprocket, your new mechanical buddy! Ring the bell on the desk next to him to wake him up.

sw13

Go pick up the Rubber Mallet from the junk box in the left corner.

sw14

Leave Sullyโ€™s and Sprocket will follow you. If you click on him you can ask him some questions. Heโ€™s not very talkative right now but youโ€™ll hear a lot more from him later.

Head to the right to return to Main Street. Run all the way to the right side and then proceed onto the next zone, known as the Hub.

The Hub

When you arrive in the Hub, run along the ramp until you get to a metal hatch that is glowing red-hot. If you try to click it, youโ€™ll see itโ€™s much too hot to touch. Walk up to it and use the robot crab in your backpack. Sprocket the robot will take it from you and then drop the poor crab on top of the hatch. The water from the robot will cool down the hatch so that you can open it up.

sw15

Go down the hatch. When you get to the bottom of the ladder, Sprocket will look pretty scared. Make your way down the pipes until you run into a plant monster living inside them. Use the old vine from your backpack underneath the sign that says, Caution: Hot Steam. This will spray steam onto the plant monster and kill it.

sw16

Move along to the bottom left of the room and youโ€™ll find the bottom of an elevator. Click on the round hatch above.

Now youโ€™ll need to solve three levels of a ball tilt maze game thatโ€™s a lot like the classic wooden box Labyrinth game. Spin the wheel either clockwise or counter-clockwise with your cursor to get the ball to the center. After you complete all three levels, the elevator will power up.

sw17

Go back up out of this area to the street. Go a few steps to the right and jump up onto the spring. After three jumps, you should land up next to another blue lever. Click the lever and the giant Hub wheel will start to move.

Go back down onto the street and run to the left. Jump up and grab the vines and climb up to a platform. Wait for the moving platform on the Hub wheel to come around and then jump onto it. Then jump off in the upper right corner (aim for the yellow pipe).

Walk to the right and use the steam valve to jump up and to the left. Continue moving until you get to the elevator entrance to the Captainโ€™s Cabin, and go inside.

sw20

A soon as you enter, Sprocket will be captured by some plant vines. Go down and click on the metal window shutters to snap the vines and free him. When you do, heโ€™ll speak to you for the first time and say, โ€œThank you.โ€ Now you can talk to him and ask him questions and hear his story.

Run to the right and use the moving platforms to get up to the large painting. Itโ€™s a copy of the painting you saw in the mayorโ€™s office.

sw23

Click on the dial at the bottom of the picture. This is a combination lock.

The combination is the number from the mayorโ€™s office: 0516. Starting with the innermost ring, click on each triangle to get the wheel to spin. Then click on it again when itโ€™s pointing to the right number. The rings get faster so this can be tricky.

sw24

When you get the combination right, a secret door will open. Go inside and youโ€™ll be in Captain Ziggsโ€™ room. Sprocket will show you who he is.

sw25

Go to the left and pick up the Bridge Key (on the floor) and the Weed Whacker (up on the wall).

sw26

Leave the room. Go down and to the right and jump off the patio to return to the Hub zone. Go right until you get to the Steam Terminal at the end. Use the Steam Battery and then solve the puzzle. Itโ€™s just like the first one, but now you need to adjust the pressure from 10 to 16 (+6).

sw27

Once youโ€™re successful, the bridge will lower and you can run across.

Production Zone

Take a few steps to the right and jump on the spring to get to the platform above. Thereโ€™s a control panel here.ย Move all the levers to the down position and then press the green button.

sw29

The giant wrecking ball will drop and hit the ground, creating a hole.

sw30

Factory

Jump down and go through the hole. Make your way down and to the right and youโ€™ll enter a mechanical room.ย First, press the three red pressure pads on each side of the machine (six in total).

sw31

Then youโ€™ll need to press the two remaining pads (the ones on the machine) at the same time. Step on one, and you’ll realise you need someone else on the other. Talk to Sprocket, who will offer to hold down one while you get the other.

sw33

The machine will turn on and the moving platforms above will start turning. Use this to get up to the top of the room. Thereโ€™s a lever on the left wall. Click it to get another platform to move up and down.

sw34

Then jump up to the right and use the platforms and vines to get to a moving conveyer belt. Here youโ€™ll need to avoid blobs that drop from a plant monster.

Continue across the vines and soon youโ€™ll find the Mech Steam Motor, one of two parts youโ€™ll need to repair the Mech in Sullyโ€™s shop garage.

sw35

Continue up on the vines and go up to the Greenhouse.

Greenhouse

Walk to the left and youโ€™ll find an area for mixing Herbicide. Pay attention to the chart on the wall. Use the dirty beaker from your backpack and then fill it with four parts red, two parts green, and three parts blue. When youโ€™re done, youโ€™ll have some Herbicide Mixture.

sw36

Go to the right and then up to the platform above. Use the herbicide on the plant monster. It will shrink and disappear, revealing a maintenance closet. Go inside.

Thereโ€™s an old custodian robot here. Heโ€™s holding onto the Living Quarters Access Key. Take it from him and then heโ€™ll wake up and the alarm system will go off. You canโ€™t leave the way you came because the security system has a pressure hose that knocks you back.

sw37

Go back out of the maintenance closet and then climb the vines above. Go to the left and youโ€™ll see that the glass dome has some tiny white cracks here. Use the rubber mallet from your backpack to smash a hole in the dome and escape.

sw38

Now run all the way back to Gear Alley, which is on the left of Main Street.

Gear Alley Redux

When you arrive, go to the bottom of the living quarters building (blue) and jump on the right platform of the lever on the gear. This will raise the one on the left.

Take a few steps to the left, then jump up the platforms to arrive at the doorway to the living quarters. Use your Steam Battery on the terminal and then solve the steam valve puzzle again.

sw39

This time, you need to adjust the steam by -3 to get it from 10 to 7. The door will open. Go inside.

Living Quarters

Go click on the blue lever on the left to make the platform rise. Use it to get up to the next level and continue making your way up.

Jump on the blue button on the floor to make the ladder rise. Youโ€™ll need to quickly jump up the ladder because it falls back down a second or two later. When you get to the top left, thereโ€™s another door leading to Zackโ€™s room. Go through it.

sw40

Zackโ€™s Room

Go up to the top left corner and click on the wall to solve the next puzzle, which is a timed game where you have to get the steam to move safely from one corner to the other. You must click on the squares to reveal pipes underneath and then swap the pipes around to create a clear path. There are three levels to get through. When you finish, a ladder will descend.

Go outside and then cross over the vine that acts as a tightrope all the way to the left, where youโ€™ll find the Mech Crank, which is the second piece you need to repair the Mech in Sullyโ€™s Garage.

sw43

Jump down to the street below and then go to Sullyโ€™s Garage.

Sullyโ€™s Garage

Use both the Mech Crank and the Steam Motor from your backpack on the Mech. It will be repaired and now you can walk around in the Mech. Is this the coolest thing ever in Poptropica or what?

sw44

Youโ€™ll also get a Teleporter device that you can use to instantly travel back to the Mech from anywhere you go on Steamworks Island.

sw45

Walking in the Mech, head out of the garage and over to the left. Thereโ€™s a big doorway covered by vines. Attach the weed whacker from your backpack to the Mech and then use the spacebar to smash all the vines.

sw46

Go through the door when itโ€™s all clear.

Storage Room

Now youโ€™re inside a storage area. Make your way through, using the space bar to smash plant monsters that attack.

sw47

At one point, youโ€™ll need to leave your Mech and power up one of the lifts. After you do,ย get back onย the Mech and ride it up to the next platform.

Continue through this zone, killing plant monsters as you go. For the plant that throws red fruit at you, duck when the fruit flies in your direction, and creep closer until you’re able to hit the monster with your Weed Whacker.

sw49

For theย final plant monster in the room, you’ll also need toย get rid of him with your Weed Whacker by pressing space bar: once for the extended part that chomps out at you, and again for the main part of the monster.

sw50

Once you’ve defeated that plant, goย through the doorway to the next zone.

Wind Zone

Go down the ramp to the left and youโ€™ll find a giant windmill. Walk all the way up to the blades, hit the windmill with the Mech by pressing space bar to make the blades move, and then Sprocket will offer to help.ย Exit the Mech and stand on the blades as they spin to ride almost to the top.

Jump onto the platform above. Use your Multi-Tool to stop the blades.

steamworks windzone

Sprocket will open the door.ย Get back in the Mech and go through the doorway.

Hibernation Center

And now we finally learn the secret of what happened to all the inhabitants of Steamworks Island. First, exit the Mech and go to the machine. Use the Multi-Tool on it, and the room will light up.

Zack will emerge from his hibernation chamber and he and Sprocket will be re-united. How sweet! Mayor Crumbย will also appear and tell you the story of what happened: their plant experiments had gone horribly wrong and the plants had become monsters. Two hundred years ago, theย island’s inhabitants put themselves into the cryogenic chambers you see all around you to save themselves and wait for rescue. If you look around, you’ll see more people!

Then youโ€™ll see and hear bumps from below. Thereโ€™s still work to be done.

sw55

Jump up to the platforms on the right and grabย the Toxic Blaster. Get back on the Mech andย attach it.

sw57

Now, takeย the elevator down to the next zone.

Tunnel System

Move through the room and shoot down the attacking plants by aiming with the mouse and using the spacebar to fire. Kill the plants that get in your way.ย You want to end up on the platform just above the floor. If you miss it, youโ€™ll need to stand on the bolt/screw thing and spin it to raise yourself up.

Thereโ€™s a moving platform here. Wait for it and then ride it across to the doorway and prepare for the final battleโ€ฆ

Plant Hive

Youโ€™re now in the final boss battle. There are three boss monsters to kill and to make things even tougher, acid starts to fill the room from below. If you touch the acid, you have to start over. You only have a short time to defeat each boss monster.

The basic technique for all three monsters is to get up close enough so that they try to strike you with their heads. Itโ€™s kind of like the Hydra from Mythology Island. When they do, you can shoot them, causing a splat. Each monster needs to be splatted three times and then it will disappear and you can move on.

Tips for Defeating the 3 Plant Bosses

The basic moves you need to remember are these: move into position, duck, wait, shoot. Or if you want something easy to remember, stop, drop, and pop.

Moving into position meansย getting close enough to the boss monster that it starts to move its head and gets ready to attack. Next, duck down and then wait until he attacks and his head goes back. Heโ€™ll be vulnerable for a second or two, so then you just blast him until you see him go “Splat!” Each boss needs to be hit like this three times. The first boss is easy, but the second and third bosses have defenses that you need to take care of while attacking.

The first boss is easy-peasy. Hereโ€™s a chance to practice the basic moves that youโ€™ll need to have down to beat the second and third bosses. Just remember the following.

  • Move into position
  • Duck and wait
  • Shoot!

Hit the boss three times to make him go “Splat” for good and disappear. Then quickly move on to boss number two.

steam monster1

The second boss is a lot like the first one except he shoots seed pods at you. You must shoot these down or theyโ€™ll hit you and knock you back. When you hit both, then repeat the basic steps: move into position, duck and wait, and then shoot. Splat this guy three times and move on to boss number three.

steam monster2

The third and final boss is the toughest of all. By now youโ€™ve got the basic rhythm down, but thereโ€™s an added complication. Not only does this guy shoot seed pods at you, but heโ€™s protected by powerful bombs that hang on the ceiling above you. If you are hit by one, the explosion will knock you back very far. If youโ€™re not careful, you could get knocked all the way down into the acid below. Ick!

It makes sense to hang back and wait for some of the bombs to drop before you move in for the kill. Once the way is clear, shoot the seed pods he sends at you, then get in and repeat the basic steps. Get into position so that his head starts to move, then duck. Next wait for his head to snap back and then shoot. Hit him three times and itโ€™s all over.

steam monster3

After you defeat the final plant monster, youโ€™ll beย presented with the Island Medallion and credits to spend at the Store. Congratulations, you’ve completed Steamworks Island!

Trivia

  • Steamworks Island is Poptropicaโ€™s 14th island.ย It was released to members on August 12, 2010 and September 9, 2010 for non-members.
  • The island is inspired by steampunk, a sub-genre of science fiction featuring steam-powered machinery.
  • Common room: Steamworks Gear Shop
  • From July 16-30, 2010, members who logged in received aย Steamworks Mech Pilot costume.
  • In Sullyโ€™s Steam-Powered Paraphernalia, thereโ€™s a model of the Poptropica blimp.
  • At the Hub, thereโ€™s a ball-tilting maze game similar to the classic wooden box Labyrinth game.
  • The quiet atmosphere of this island means you will seldom interact with, or even come across, other characters.
  • The name of the mechanical companion who follows you is called Sprocket, which is also the name of a wheel-like object found in machinery.
  • When you ring the bell to wake Sprocket inside Sullyโ€™s, it will make an audible โ€œdingโ€ noise.
  • On the blackboard in the greenhouse, it says โ€œHazmat was hereโ€ย โ€“ probably in reference to Poptropica Creator alias Hazmat Hermit.
  • One of the questions you can ask Sprocket after he becomes more talkative is what he does for fun. Heโ€™ll say heโ€™s been writing his autobiography and wants to call it I, Robot โ€“ which could be aย reference to several works.
  • Weโ€™re told the inhabitants of Steamworks Island have been frozen for 200 years, which calculated from present time would mean around the time of the Industrial Revolution, when all this steam technology would have beenย rampant.

Full steam ahead!

  1. please help me , i am stuck in the factory . when i went into the hole i just went on another tab for a minute and then i saw that i was an empty place at the left side of the factory when whenevr i try to reach the factory to my right side it appears to be a wall. what to da help me…

  2. The boss level is WAY too much to ask from a kid, and what are these controls? How can you shoot at it if you have to aim downward to crouch? The second you raise up you get hit. Gravity fails and those elevators are too slow. Ditch the acid, that level is difficult enough, and no I’m not whining because I can’t get past that, think about the controls and the goal and you’ll see my point.

  3. My Steamworks Island seems to be glitchy. I remember the first time I went onto the street to the very left, the Mech was already there, although I didn’t have any of the required tools. Now, when I exit the storage room through the exit at the top, I end up in front of the main enterance.

  4. Does anyone think that they should make more islands related to… well BETTER books. No offense to those who like diary of a wimpy kid or galactic hot dogs, but they should reach everyones interest and maybe make multiple islands for a series of NOVELS. I vote bliss triology or once upon a marigold the first of the series. (Not a lot of people now them but they would make great islands) this is my opinion, no one reply if they dont like it

  5. I have a problem trying to beat the island. Its more of a bug, but when I leave Zack’s room to the part where you are supposed to be on the vine to get the mech crank, I instead spawn where you first enter the area.I have tried everything, but nothing happens. Help?

slantedfish: Probably a glitch – try contacting Poptropica support for help.

  6. Someone please reply if this is a glitch and I have to restart. When I’m done the valve puzzle and go through the exit that’s SUPPOSED to bring me to the vine tightrope thing, it just brings me to the start of the street. HELP

  7. I just finished this island and… wow. It is amazing! It has everything a Poptropica Island needs! The challenges are difficult, the art is amazing (Especially all the stuff floating in the air!), and the story is one of the best! Easily one of my favorite Poptropica islands! Who knows, maybe it will get ported to worlds?

      1. I defeated the third plant monster when the acid was SIZZLING AT MY KNEES!!! Talk about dramatic!

      1. I think you’re suppose to use the acid shooter. And are you aiming for the head?

I don’t know about the login screen worp though.

  8. When i drove the mech out of the garage, it got stuck in the floor and is still stuck there no matter if i reload or respawn, anyone know how to fix it?
