Mystery of the Battle Arena

The battle arena โ€” a feature promised in the Legendary Swords mini-quest that never made it to the game. Is it another Monster Carnival? Will we see it again on Poptropica? We may never know, but Iโ€™m here to investigate on that case!

Warning: The post includes slight spoilers.

Background

Back in November 2011, Poptropica released a mini-quest different from other mini-quests: Legendary Swords. It mainly focuses on swordfighting (hence the name) and robots. This is also the first time your player decides to take a โ€œvacationโ€ to outer space. As your player gazes the vast galaxy, he/she notices an explosion coming from a jungle planet (not to be confused with the one from Astro-Knights) and decides to investigate the explosion. He/she comes across evil robots headed by Dr. E. Vile, who plans to take over Poptropica.

After defeating the final robot in the game, your player speaks to Dr. E. Vile and hopes to find the mastermind. Back in the early days of the game, players would see this familiar โ€œcoming soonโ€ banner of the feature at the end of the game, but some time ago, it was removed โ€“ a promise that didn’t get to see the light of day.

Similar to Monster Carnival, the idea of a Legendary Swords Battle Arena has appeared a couple of times around the game, becoming another Poptropica mystery. While Poptropica hasnโ€™t made any news regarding the feature, some hints have surfaced โ€“ let’s take a look.

Mocktropica trash bin

In 2013, Poptropica hinted at the Battle Arena in the trash scene on Mocktropica Island. Since itโ€™s in the trash, is it officially scrapped?

Along with this tidbit is a “Monster Carnival” script with a โ€œNOPEโ€ on it, which caused many players to lose hope over the island that almost never was. But months later, Monster Carnival debuted on Poptropica! Could the same happen with the Battle Arena?

battlearena

Another rumor before Mocktropica launched were the sneak peeks of battle bots seen in the Daily Pop possibly being connected to the return of Legendary Swords. Sadly, this was proven false as they turned out to be part of the Mega Fighting Bots game on Mocktropica!

PoptropiCon atrium displays

More evidence that the Battle Arena had not been forgotten appeared in the second episode of PoptropiConโ€™s common room, the Atrium. The room is filled with displays of Legendary Swords references and concepts around the mini-quest. There’s also a statue of Dr. E. Vile as a Poptropican, and statues of the robots that appeared in-game. Will we ever see it again? Check out the pictures:

Verdict

For this case, I think Poptropica doesnโ€™t have plans to continue this for now and thatโ€™s why they removed the banner on Legendary Swords (and also to end the mystery, at least for now). I suppose Poptropica is kind of busy with the new features and upgrades back in 2011, they did say that they always โ€œpoke aroundโ€ and they do their best to make Poptropica better than ever so, thatโ€™s why they didnโ€™t have time for the feature.

Itโ€™s understandable why this happened and my verdict is that it wonโ€™t come around for now; maybe in due time, or maybe it never will. As the Creators like to say to questions on Twitter, they โ€œnever say neverโ€œ! What do you think?

Poptropica Portfolio: Chris Goodwin

Nate Greenwall isn’t the only one posting his Poptropica illustrationsย –ย I recently stumbled upon the site of Chris Goodwin, an illustrator/designer working for Poptropica, whose online portfolio can be found here.ย This post comes in three parts. As always, click to enlarge the pics!

Perhaps the most interestingย section isย character design: designs for E. Vile’s robots from Legendary Swords (as well as some props seen in P-Con: Ep. 2), a huge collection of characters (including severalย unreleased ones – some possibly for Ep. 3 of PoptropiCon!), unused flying ace designs (the corner suggests they were for the Virus Hunter minigame, Nano-Combat Training), ideas for Max McGullicutty’s look in Survival: Ep. 5, and finally, rough drafts of robots for Game Show Island.

The next section is concept art โ€“ ideas for various parts of the game. Here we see color plans for areas inside Joe’s body on Virus Hunter Island, shape ideas for “air creatures” in his lungs, a look at an extravagant (though unused) virus bug, several sketches of dark scenes, racer cars we’ve seen before as a scrapped idea, a Legendary Swords doodle, the Monster Carnival common room, and a sketch from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Island.

Lastly, there’s a section devoted to scene illustrations – most of these are already in the game, though the one of the cabin is not (but it seems to belong to the unnamed geological park island).

The rest are: the tutorial island in the Poptropica app, Ephraim University (both exterior and interior) from Mocktropica, Soundstage #1 on Back Lot, the Hemlock Herald newspaper room on Ghost Story, a hallway doorย and post office common room on Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and the bonus quest onย Twisted Thicket. Seeing them eachย as one big scene makes it all the more awesome. โค

Poptropica sure is beautiful, andย Chris has made some really creative contributions to the game we know and love. Enjoy the Chris Goodwin collection, andย stay popping, Poptropicans! ๐Ÿ˜€

Daily Pop, Dec 2014: Galactic Hot Dogs, Way Back Week, & more!

Hey Poptropicans! December isn’t quite over yet, butย this month’s Daily Pop sneak peeks (and more) are already on Poptropica’s servers!ย A good chunk of this month’s peeks are for the upcoming Galactic Hot Dogs Island, so let’s take a look at those first (click here forย round one of GHD!):

Among the sneak peeks, it looks like we’ll be traversing strange lands including a desert landscape, mushroom kingdom, a place with galactic food stands (Main Street?), and more. It seems we’llย also be stealing an Egg from a big bird’s nest and encountering some interesting creatures.

For more info on Galactic Hot Dogs Island, check out our GHD trivia page! Remember, also, that you can always browse the entire Daily Pop collection on the PHB’s Sneak Peek Archive.

Nestled among all the GHD pics is this sneak peek for the final installment of Arabian Nights Island, which features the spire with the telescope stand seen in Episode 1, but this time, night has fallen!

Bad Moon Rising: The days are hot but the nights are sizzling.

Finally, since the Creators will be taking a well-deserved break for the holidays, they’ve prepared a “Way Back Week” of peeks from December 26 to January 5, featuring throwback images from years ago. I especially likeย all the designs for E. Vile, the villain of the Legendary Swords mini-quest!

Again, be sure to check out the PHB’s Daily Pop Sneak Peek Archive (under the Cool Stuff tab) for a complete collection of Daily Pop images with their titles and captions, all the way from when they first began in November 2010 and updated monthly. Stay popping, Poptropicans! ๐Ÿ˜€

Facili-Tee, music previews, Avengers, & more

Hey Poptropicans!ย A new common room has been added to PoptropiCon Island: Facili-Tee, located right outside the convention center! Funny that they released this after the island came out, but at least we have a new common room… that hasn’t happened for the past two islands. ๐Ÿ˜›

By the way, have you found the special “7” balloon in the common rooms yet? It’s quite rare, so it may take several tries, but you’ll win a snazzy 7th birthday costume if you manage to pop it. Good news: the Creators say they’ll be turning up the frequency of the balloon’s appearance, so there’s now a better chance of finding it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Here’s a video from HPuterpop showing what that looks like:

Poptropica’s birthday party only lasts through September, so once the month ends, so will your chances to get the special costume and free balloon in the Store โ€“ so pick those up quick! Also, you can click here to check out theย recap of the PHB’s celebration of Pop’s 7th birthday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Poptropica Music tour page

Poptropica Music now has its own page, which you can find here. It currently advertises the Volume One music album, and while you can listen to previews of the first two tracks there, you can hear previews for all the tracks on their actual iTunes and Amazon pages.

popmusic headerIf you like listening to Poptropica’s music, check out our Behind the Scenes page, where we’ve listed links to where you can listen to these tracks online through Poptropica’s own files! (Be sure to read the simple instructions on the page to get those links to work.)

Mighty Action Force = Avengers?

Have you noticed that PoptropiCon’s “Mighty Action Force” parodies some of the characters in Marvel’s The Avengers? Gold Face is Iron Man, World Guy is Captain America, and Elf Archer is Hawkeye or Black Widow (not to be confused with the Black Widow of Counterfeit Island!).ย It checks out:

Anyway, just a heads-up that you can find cool trivia facts like this and more on all the PHB’s island trivia pages, which are all listedย under the Island Help hub page. For more PoptropiCon trivia, click here!

Daily Pop: legendary E. Vile & furniture

Among all the recent Daily Pop sneak peeks, these two in particular may be of interest – first is “Props to You”, which features the Legendary Swords villain E. Vile in his spectacular helmetย (and your rocket) as decorations in the PoptropiCon convention hall, and the second is a preview of some furniture, most likely as an upcoming feature for Land (Labs). Here they are:

Will we ever see a return for Legendary Swords? They used to promise a battle arena at the end of the quest, but this message has inconspicuously been removed from the ending for some time now (after they failed to deliver on it for three years, I might add ๐Ÿ˜› ). RIP. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

ls11As for Land, it’s likely we’ll get to play with furniture sometime soon, to further develop the many cool houses (among other awesome things) people have been making —ย but for now, maybe the PHB’sย Land (Labs) guide will help you members get started with this cool feature if you wantย some tips.

As is typical in these days, the action in Poptropica doesn’t stop — so be sure to check out the other posts on the PHB homeย page to catch up with all the news! Stay popping, Poptropicans. ๐Ÿ˜€

Daily Pop, Legendary Swords

The return of Legendary Swords?

Hi Gs,

This topic has been a recurring theme throughout the years, mostly because there has been no avail. If any of you remember, Legendary Swords was a mini-quest released years ago (you can still get it from the store). Legendary Swords ended with a cliff hanger and it was to be continued. But it wasn’t.

In Mocktropica, you can find a piece of paper while searching through a trash bin that shows the villain of Legendary Swords. The paper is crumpled up, hinting that the series will never be continued.

However, Daily Pops before and after Mocktropica’s release had been very suggestive of an underground theme, which is very Legendary Swords-esque. Those sort of tapered off until there was no more mention of them — but with one recent Daily Pop, they seem to have risen again.

cavesDP

The title of the Daily Pop above is “Crystallized” — but the most interesting thing is the description — “The caves have come around again.” Are the Creators acknowledging the seemingly forgotten underground DP posts? If so, are these posts related to Legendary Swords?

And have you noticedย all the Legendary things happening lately? Thanks to CaptainSpencer for giving me this lead. Tell me your thoughts in the comments. ๐Ÿ™‚
